Oh I am so sorry for your problems Dear - please go into your Game Folder/EA Games/Sims 2 and apart from the yellow Game Folders you'll find new created (automatically created) files called: Accessory.cache,
Contentregistry and Groups.cache. DELETE them.. and try to restart your game.

That usually works. I do it all the time to keep the game running smoothly. If it doesnt, right click the launcher, and run as administrator. see if that works.

On Windows as the sims 3 , the sims 2 can be easily launch in bypassing the launcher, in excecuting Sims2EP09.exe located here
C: (or other letters) \Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 Mansions and Garden \TSBin"
Then create a shortcut in your desktop.Everytime you want to play the game, use this shortcut instead of the launcher. In the Sims 2 it isn't necessary.
By caution better run it with administrator rights.

Colleen,

I am so happy to hear it's working again for you.  I remember the problems
EA/Maxis created when they messed with the launcher.  What a mess.

I remember reading something about a solution on mts or matu, or maybe it
was somewhere else.  I copied the solutions above it case this problem makes
a surprise visit to my game someday.

Have fun decorating.
