Sam and Anneke, here is a link so you can read all about infant jaundice:

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/infant-jaundice/basics/definition/con-20019637

I imagine Leah's Mom went back so she could be with the baby...

Anita, is Vicky nursing? (that would also make it easier for both baby Leah and Mom).

I'm glad the levels are lowered :D

This is what I could find to explain jaundice:

Your baby’s body recycles some red blood cells each day. Bilirubin is a yellow substance that forms as red blood cells break down. During pregnancy, your liver removes bilirubin for your baby. After birth, your baby’s liver may not be developed enough to properly remove bilirubin on its own. It can take a few days for your baby’s liver to be able to do this.

When a baby’s liver causes jaundice in the first days of life, it’s called physiologic jaundice. This is the most common kind of jaundice in newborns. But sometimes a health condition in your baby can cause jaundice. Babies with these health conditions are more likely to need treatment to help lower their bilirubin levels than babies with physiologic jaundice.
\

Baby will be tested again this morning. She lies in an incubator with a purple uv light.
She slept well last night, and Vicky says she is also feeling a little calmer.

I will keep you posted.

They have been discharged late yesterday afternoon, but Leah still has to lie under the uv light. Her br count is still very high, but she is out of danger for now.

Vicky says she does not like it at all, to lie there without any clothes on! What a good girl she is! giggle .
I suggested she should give her one of her comfy toys to hold, that would make her feel more safe.
I have not heard from her again yet.

Thank you Sam, for being interested in the wellbeing of my little people, I do not want to be a boring granny!! whistle

I think she is out of the woods, you guys, she has to be tested again tomorrow (Monday) and if the count is further down they do not have to leave her under the uv light.

But the doctor said for tonight she need not be under the light. So Riaan decided he is going to his two girls on a date! That is so cute.

Anita, that is good news. When Florence was born she had Jaundice and had to be put under UV lamps. It was a very worrying time as I had a long and difficult birth, so I can imagine how you feel. But babies really are amazing...after a day or so she was fine and her liver started working properly. Hopefully little Leah is on the mend and beginning to recover from the birth. Its hard for babies going through labour as well. Please dont feel as if you are boring us with your family news. I know I love to read it!

Thank you Lisa, I appreciate it so much!
But, I am close to tears as I am writing this to you all.
Leah was tested again this morning, and the BR count went up again to 280. For her weight it should be below 150. She now has to go in to the hospital again tomorrow to get blood samples again so her liver and BR count can be tested, as well as a urinary sample to see if her kidneys are working fine.

She has 400 grams in weight the last week so at least she is growing. If the doctor is not happy with the results Leah will be referred to a pediatrician in the city. I told Vicky if I were her, I would already have gone to one. But she is still comfortable with the local doctor.

Oh yes, the doctor only now thought about checking the compatibility of the parents' blood groups.
I would have thought that is one of the first things one address when pregnant!
I am actually upset about all this, the jaundice should have been far less by now!

My son also had baby jaundice and had to lie under the UV light (as did Leah) and he was better within a day without any further need for the light at home.

I do pray that nothing else is wrong with the little darling!

Anita prayers for Leah that all goes well. My oldest son Eric was born with jaundice and he was only under the light that first day then he was fine.

Eric went in for his tonsillectomy today. Was a 30 minute procedure then we had to wait 2 hours while anesthesia wore off. He is home now eating icecream and watching youtube. He feels ok but says it hurts to talk and sometimes swallow but other than that he is good.

Hi Becky..wow your son had it to..I had never heard of it until Anita told us..

I am so glad your son finally had his tonsils out..and back home..in the same day..when Renee had hers done when she was 9 they had her over night I think..and it took longer than 30 minutes..seems they have perfected this tonsillectomy a lot over the years..Renee is now 33..

Becky: My son who had jaundice as well, also only had to be under the uv light a short while but our poor baby girl is in her 7th day of having it. Her count was over 300 when they first checked it, and ever since it is up and down, but never below 220 yet.
Yesterday the count was 280 and today's is 230. The doctor did some other routine tests today, but we will only get the results tomorrow.

Vicky has decided to take Leah off the breast milk for now, and we think the drop today was due to that. We will wait and see what will happen tomorrow.

I am glad that your son took the surgery well. They enjoy it so much to be allowed to do a few things they would otherwise not be allowed: like having ice cream any time of the day! giggle

I hope he will be all good and well soon!

Oh Anita..I am wondering if there is something in Vicky's milk that is causing this..I didn't know she was breast feeding..I hope that is all that is wrong and everything works out..

We're having a restful weekend... Travis and Ben went to the movies yesterday to see Logan...

...Mitchell (who came through his surgery Friday morning with flying colors) stayed home to rest and recuperate...

...except he kept asking me what I needed! He was filling in for Ben.

I love my young men! <3

Me, too!

It will be just Ben and me after June... Travis and Mitchell are moving to Montana then.

I'm still up in the air about staying in this house... it is really too big for just Ben and me. However, the kitties are safe to go outside here... I can jacuzzi when I want... sigh. My lease is not up until November, but I need to make a choice by April...
