Hi All :D

Have you ever gone cc shopping, been on a download binge, searched for a cool set you just found, or a mesh needed for a recolor?

...then you come across something like these:

Well, don't despair - there is a solution (caveat: most of the time) - the Wayback Machine!  Link

Note: I use Google Chrome, so if you're using a different internet browser, your pages may look a bit different.

This is what I do:

1. Copy the link that leads to the "not found" page

2. Go to the Wayback Machine

3. Paste the link in the url box and click Browse History

4. If Wayback has the page archived, you will see it - any images on the page may not be visible, fyi

5. Click on one of the earliest dates (preferably a date shaded blue - see the notes at the bottom of the calendar for what each color means)

7. Click the download link on the archived web page

8. Copy the download link that appears on the Wayback Machine page and paste it into a new tab to get your download

~~~~~~~
Okay - the above are the general steps to use in finding a download link via the Wayback Machine. Sometimes, however, the process is not so smooth...
...here is the first thing that can happen:
The Wayback Machine does not have that particular instance of the web page archived.
If this happens, Wayback Machine generally offers to do a general search for that webpage. It will remove the specifics of that particular archived page and look through other instances of that page.
Wayback Machine will continue to offer you more and more general searches (if it can) until there is nothing left to search.
At this point, the odds of finding what you are looking for go down as the page/post may never have been archived.
This can be disconcerting, because the particular post/page you are looking for may not have been archived.
If you got a lot of search results on your item (I look at image results, not just site results on Google Search), you may find someone else who reblogged the post or the original post link from the creator. Just follow the above steps again - your results may be very different.
If, however, you are not able to find any post with the item or items you are looking for, I would suggest putting out a wcif to see if someone has the file/files you are looking for - we are fortunate to have a wonderfully sharing community.
~~~~~~~

The next things that can happen are weird link results from Wayback Machine, including the Dreaded Robots.txt page...

...again, do not fear!

There are solutions!!!

What the robots.txt result means is that Wayback is unable to open the download link page - all you need to do is right click & copy the link and paste it into a new tab.

It really isn't any different than the steps originally listed, so do not be afraid of robots.txt.

~~~~~~~
Another common result is the Wayback Machine link result page that has a bunch of %'s or other weird things is actually a bigger problem.
It, too, though, has a solution - urldecoder!  Link
This nifty website allows one to "decode" a url - basically, it will remove all the %'s and leave you with a more readable url.
Deciding what part of a url to copy and paste for a download page can be a trial & error process, and with practice, become much easier.
You do not want to copy the part that may include a redirect. Look for the part of the results that look like a typical url address to use.
Here is one more picture of what urldecoder might give you:
~~~~~~~

Finding what you're looking for via the Wayback Machine actually happens most of the time - at least, that has been my experience.

Using Wayback Machine in conjunction with urldecorder improves the likelihood of obtaining what you are searching for...

...the key is patience and when using urldecoder, trial & error.

~~~~~~~
I've been using Wayback Machine for years and years. It's good for other things besides the Sims. This is the first time I've ever seen a tutorial about it. I learned a thing or two from it. Thanks for taking the time to write it up and post the pictures.
You are very welcome, May :D
It is a wonderful tool to view archived internet sites and pages...
...I even donate to it once in awhile.
So, I'm trying to get past a robot.txt page and I'm not sure what to do. I know how to copy/paste the link but not sure what you mean by past it into a new tab. A new instant of Wayback Machine or literally in a new tab? I tried both and neither worked. Maybe I'm saving the wrong link? Not the one in the middle of the page but maybe the address url?
Hi May - when you get the robots.txt notification, the link should actually be in a box on the page (not the url box at the top of the window)...
...if it is a link with %'s in it, just select it and right click
...one of the right click menu options is to Open in a New Tab
...that should open a brand new browser tab (not Wayback) for you
~~~

...if the link has %'s in it, you will need to select and copy it into urldecoder

...from there, you may need to play trial and error to figure out which part of the decoded url you need in order to open the file hosting link page.

Call me (on my cell) if you need more help :D

Also, if you take a screen capture of the robots.txt Wayback Machine page, I could tell you which option of steps you need to take <3

Suzanne,

Thanks for the quick response. I think there is an error in the follow up instructions you game me.

...if it is a link with %'s in it, just select it and right click

...if the link has %'s in it, you will need to select and copy it into urldecoder

May - there were a few other steps in the first option...

Did I mess up? Take a look at the pictures and instructions at the top...

...if it is a link with %'s in it, just select it and right click

...one of the right click menu options is to Open in a New Tab

...that should open a brand new browser tab (not Wayback) for you

OR

...if the link has %'s in it, you will need to select and copy it into urldecoder

...from there, you may need to play trial and error to figure out which part of the decoded url you need in order to open the file hosting link page.

So that was user error on my part. LOL I wasn't associating those pictures with the robot.txt because they were under the archive not found pics and I was associating it with that.

Okay,  back to my original problem.   I'm sure this is just user error on my part.

When I R-click on the url in the text box (center screen).  It gives me the go to (url address) option (but not the open in new tab option).  Doing so, just sends me to a 404 page.

I did try clicking the robot.txt link which gave me this page:

I will come back and edit this post once I figure out why photobucket isn't working. I really don't want to have to make an account at Imgur right this second. Wails

Hey May, tilly won't allow Photobucket on here anymore..so if you want pictures posted you may have to use Imgur lol..or another hosting site..I really like Imgur because I can put copy and paste a picture right to my post..I don't have to use the "Insert Image" or anything like that..

You can text me your image, May, until you can upload it here...

...that way, I can help you sooner, maybe :D

(I forgot we don't allow Photobucket images any longer - apologies)

OMG!!!! If I have to go thru all of this just to find something - I will toss the Sims and all the files right into the trash can and go back to playing Candy Crush. I could go totally brain dead just trying to read all of this and follow the directions! Holy Moly. I've already got gray hair and this is going to make it worse!

I'm in Las Vegas, so we can talk on the phone or on skype - if you would like, pm me and I'll send you my phone number <3

Seriously, don't worry - if my 82 year old Mother can do Facebook, you can do this :D
